Pirates sign RHP Shelby Miller to minor league deal

The Pittsburgh Pirates are signing right-handed pitcher Shelby Miller to a minor league deal, according to sources in an MLB.com report, and Miller will join the Pirates’ Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis.

Miller, 30, drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round of the 2009 draft, has battled injury and inconsistency over his nine seasons in the majors, though his first four seasons were largely successful.

With the Atlanta Braves, Miller made the 2015 National League All-Star team and finished the season with a 3.02 ERA over 205 1/3 innings (33 starts), though his record was 6-17.

He has pitched for the Cardinals, Braves, Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs.

Miller, who opted out of the 2020 season, has made three starts with the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate in Iowa this season, allowing four runs in 10 1/3 innings.

He also pitched in three games for the Cubs at the beginning of the season, giving up seven runs in two innings.
