Borehamwood named one of the most enterprising towns during lockdown

Borehamwood has been named of the most enterprising places in the UK over the pandemic, according to new research.

New research using the government’s free company data product determined the most enterprising towns and cities since the start of the first lockdown.

Borehamwood was found to be the fourth most enterprising town, with one business set up for every 31 people in the town between March 2020 and March 2021.

The data was analysed by the team behind Awin Access; an entry-level solution that opens up affiliate marketing to small businesses and start ups.

The team looked at private businesses registered with Companies House from March 23, 2020 to March 31, 2021.

The companies monitored include only corporate body types regulated by legislation relevant to Companies House, and does not include all business types (for example, sole traders were excluded).

Using this data, the team looked at the registered postal town of each business and accumulated the results to find the number of companies registered in each town and city during this period, looking at the top 150 results.

Kington in Herefordshire was unveiled as the most enterprising region throughout lockdown, with the complete top 10 list of ‘most enterprising’ UK towns and cities revealed as:

1. Kington – 2 (people for every business registered between March 2020 and March 2021)

2. Droitwich Spa – 15

3. Smethwick – 29

4. Borehamwood – 31

5. Manchester – 32

6. London – 33

7. Altrincham – 34

8. Kidderminster – 37

9. Leicester – 39

10. Watford – 43

On the other end of the scale sits Halifax (one business for every 388 people), Dudley (one for every 330) and Wakefield (one for every 261).

Speaking about the findings, Michele O’Sullivan, from Awin Access, said: “In the past year, we have seen astonishing resilience and ingenuity from businesses all over the UK, with people setting companies up despite the odds being stacked against them.

“Awin Access is a great way for small businesses to enter into the affiliate partnership world and we have seen the emergence of fantastic new grassroots brands that have grown in popularity and are here to stay.”
